Seating Chart Maker
Choose a room layout, add your class list and shuffle. Keep chosen students apart, swap seats by dragging or tapping, then print. Also known as a seating plan.
Class lists and seating charts stay in this browser and are never sent anywhere. Use first names or numbers only.
How to make a seating chart
- Pick a layout: rows of single desks, rows of pairs, group tables (2, 4 or 6 seats) or a horseshoe.
- Set the size to match your room.
- Add your class list below the chart.
- Press Shuffle seats for a random chart, or Fill in list order.
- Swap seats: drag one seat onto another with a mouse, or tap one seat and then another on a touch screen.
- Print the chart for your sub binder or the door.
Keeping students apart
Open Keep apart and list pairs such as Ben + Hugo, one per line. Shuffle then avoids putting them in neighboring seats (including diagonally) or on the same table. If the room is too small to manage it, the chart tells you.
Charts are saved for each class list in this browser. Tick View from the back to see the room the way students do. For subs, add the printout to your substitute binder.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a random seating chart?
Choose a layout, add your class list and press Shuffle seats. Press it again for a new arrangement.
Can I keep certain students apart?
Yes. Add the pairs under Keep apart. Shuffling avoids seating them next to each other or on the same table.
Is a seating chart the same as a seating plan?
Yes. "Seating chart" is more common in the US and "seating plan" in the UK.
Is my seating chart saved?
Yes, in this browser, for each class list. Print it or take a screenshot to share it with colleagues.
