How this EYFS planning template works

  • Weekly plan: the seven areas of learning down the side, Monday to Friday across. Note adult-led activities, focus children's groups (not names), stories and songs.
  • Continuous provision: each area of your setting with its enhancements for the week, key vocabulary and the adult's role.
  • Everything you type saves in this browser. Print one page or both, or download an A4 Word file.

The seven areas of learning

The EYFS statutory framework sets out three prime areas: Communication and Language; Personal, Social and Emotional Development; and Physical Development. There are four specific areas: Literacy; Mathematics; Understanding the World; and Expressive Arts and Design.

Planning in the EYFS should follow children's interests and next steps, so many settings keep a weekly plan light and adapt it as the week goes on. The three characteristics of effective learning (playing and exploring, active learning, and creating and thinking critically) are worth noting next to activities.

Planning a single focused activity? Use the EYFS activity plan in the lesson plan maker. US preschool teachers may prefer the preschool lesson plan template.

Observations and children's data

Keep observations and assessments of individual children in your setting's own system (paper or an approved app), not on a planning sheet. Plan for groups and needs, not named children.

Questions teachers ask

What are the 7 areas of learning in the EYFS?

Communication and Language; Personal, Social and Emotional Development; Physical Development; Literacy; Mathematics; Understanding the World; and Expressive Arts and Design.

Do I have to write EYFS planning in a set format?

No. The EYFS framework does not prescribe a planning format. Settings choose what works for them, and many keep planning brief and flexible.

What is continuous provision?

The resources and areas available to children all the time (such as sand, water, construction and mark making), which adults enhance with new resources linked to children's interests and learning.
