    How preschool lesson plans differ

Preschool lesson plans are built around a theme and the daily routine rather than a single lesson: circle time, learning centers, art and sensory play, music and movement, outdoor play, story time, and routines such as snack and transitions. Goals cover every area of development: cognitive, language, physical and social-emotional.

    • Play first. Most learning happens through play in centers; adult-led group times are short.
    • Process over product. Plan open-ended art rather than crafts that all look the same.
    • Observe and adapt. Note what children are interested in and build the next plan around it.

Teaching in England? Use the EYFS planning template instead, or switch the format to EYFS.

    Observations and children's information

Plan for groups and ages, not named children. Keep individual observations, allergies and family information in your program's own secure records. What you type here stays in your browser only.

Example: a "Falling leaves" preschool plan

Here is a complete example made with the maker above. Use it as a model, or load it into the form and change it to suit your class.

    Frequently asked questions

What should a preschool lesson plan include?

A theme, learning goals across areas of development, materials, circle time, learning centers, art or sensory play, music and movement, outdoor play, story time, routines, adaptations and a family connection.

How long should preschool activities be?

Group times of about 10 to 20 minutes work for most three- and four-year-olds, with longer stretches of free play in centers.

Do preschool lesson plans need standards?

Many programs link plans to their state's early learning guidelines. Add them in the Early learning standards box.
