What is an exit ticket?
An exit ticket is a short question or task students answer at the end of a lesson, before they leave. It takes two or three minutes and shows you who met the objective, so you can plan tomorrow's groups or re-teach.
Exit ticket ideas
- 3-2-1: three things I learned, two I found interesting, one question I still have.
- Rate your understanding: a face scale plus one thing learned.
- Muddiest point: what was most confusing, and what would help.
- Before and after: "Before today I thought… Now I think…".
- One problem: a single question that tests the objective directly. This is often the most useful.
Using the results
Sort tickets into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) in a few minutes. Start the next lesson with a quick re-teach for the "not yet" group, or pair students up.
Frequently asked questions
How long should an exit ticket take?
Two to five minutes. Keep it to one to three questions.
Should exit tickets be graded?
Usually not. They are a quick formative check to guide your next lesson.
Can I show exit ticket questions on the board instead of printing?
Yes. Press Show on screen and students answer on paper, mini whiteboards or sticky notes.
